San Jose Offering Small Business Grants for Downtown Entrepreneurs

San Jose Office of Economic Development
Applications are now being taken by the San Jose Office of Economic Development for grants to small business owners moving into downtown storefront neighborhoods. The grants will focus on retail businesses and small start up companies and provide financial assistance to help them open for business.

Applications will be open through October 2, 2013. In addition, the office of Economic Development (OED) is offering assistance in the form of workshops that will provide technical assistance to businesses interested in applying for grants.

Eligible grant seekers include entrepreneurs, sole proprietors, small-business owners, nonprofit organizations, property owners and contractors working with prospective tenants. Grants will be awarded up to $16,000.

California's tough business and tax rules have taken their toll on small business. The downtown area now has a 19 percent vacancy rate. The city of San Jose wants to turn this around by providing more support to small business, the backbone of job growth in California. In addition to a budget of $250,000 to support the grant program, the city is also offering small businesses up to $16,000 in credit to offset the cost of city permits, fees and taxes.

The city hopes the new grant program will not only help small businesses thrive in the downtown area but bring increased business to neighborhood business districts.
