Study Shows These Top 5 Cities Are The Best Place to Launch a Start-Up
NerdWallet.com is a personal finance website that helps consumers make money decisions in areas such as education, finance, health, investing, and shopping. In 2010, CNNMoney listed NerdWallet among its Top 20 Best Money Sites. NerdWallet recently published a survey of the top 10 best cities in which to launch a start-up business. Here are the first 5.

  1. Oklahoma City, Oklahoma - this city moved from fifth place in 2012 to its current number one rating. It may something to do with its low cost of living, low taxes, ease of starting a business, and a revitalized downtown.
  2. Miami, Florida - Miami has a very diverse and growing population, most of whom are strongly motivated to be entrepreneurs. It also helps greatly that the city encourages the entrepreneurial spirit with Miami Dade College's Minority & Small Business Enterprise Office that focuses on helping develop minority and women-owned small businesses.
  3. Omaha, Nebraska - Omaha has several pluses, including a low cost of living, institutional support for entrepreneurs, and the presence of big companies like Berkshire Hathaway, ConAgra and Union Pacific Railroad that serve as mentors and often a source for breakaways who want to start off on their own.
  4. Raleigh, North Carolina - is home to many global companies who are mentors to small business. It is also home to three major universities that focus on advanced technology, medical care and clean technology.
  5. Nashville, Tennessee - Nashville is now known not only for its music but for the increasing number of start-ups. No sales tax, low-interest loans, and six major colleges that pump out new talent are all pluses for this southern city.
