What To Know

Small Business Administration (SBA) Grants and Loans

While the SBA doesn’t directly offer loans to small businesses, they do provide you with a number of different resources and opportunities for finding small business funding.

The SBA's Office of Technology administers the Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) Program and the Small Business Technology Transfer (STTR) Program. Through these two competitive programs, SBA ensures that the nation's small, high-tech, innovative businesses are a significant part of the federal government's research and development efforts.

Eleven federal departments participate in the SBIR program; five departments participate in the STTR program awarding $2 billion in grant funding and loans to small high-tech businesses.

The Office of Technology promotes federal small business high technology programs to improve the competitive capability of small research and development businesses with particular emphasis on emerging and under served small firms. It encourages state-of-the-market technology training, technology information exchange, and outreach on federal technology programs.

It also encourages private and public resource support for the commercialization of federal R & D efforts. It promotes outreach activities to introduce women- and minority-owned small businesses to the advantages of competing for federal R & D projects.
