The Early Care and Education Funders Collaborative is awarding $300,000 to local non-profits to improve early care and education for low-income children in the region.  The collaborative, run by The Washington Area Women’s Foundation, is dishing out its first grants to six local groups.  Each will get $50,000 in grants.  Hopkins House, for example, will help low-income women in Northern Virginia earn their Child Development Associate credential.”

Small Business Grants Available in Districts 7 and 11 In Miami

Starting Monday, Commissioner Carlos A. Gimenez will start accepting applications from small businesses in his district for the Mom and Pop Small Business Grant Program. Commissioner Joe A. Martinez plans to start accepting applications Jan. 12. Business owners who qualify can receive up to $10,000 earmarked for equipment, supplies, advertising, marketing, inventory, building liability insurance, security systems and minor renovation projects.

New Jersey Governor Authorizes Local Business Grants

New Jersey Gov. Jon S. Corzine made good on a pledge to spur the state's economy, signing legislation that gives businesses a $3,000 grant for every new employee they hire and keep for a year or longer. The "Invest New Jersey" legislation also waives the state's 7 percent sales tax for companies making capital investments of $5,000 or more over the next two years.

This comes after City Council members criticized the process as flawed, guided by no overarching economic development vision.
