For the third time, New York is giving money to small businesses who suffered damages by Hurricane Sandy. This round of grant money is $1.8 million, making the total $50 million in federal funds that has been awarded to as many as 15,000 small businesses.

It has been four years since Hurricane Sandy hit the East coast and caused devastation to hundreds of businesses in 2012. Now the focus is on preventing damage in the future if another such event occurs. As part of the grant program, the Department of Small Business Services’ BusinessPREP initiative will offer additional help with free assessments and up to $3,000 to buy preventative equipment such as flood barriers, pumps, generators, and data recovery technology.

Qualifications for grants

To qualify for this round of grants, businesses must be located in high-risk flood zone areas, including parts of lower and upper Manhattan, Chinatown, West Chelsea, Brighton Beach, Coney Island, Red Hook, Downtown Brooklyn, the Rockaways, Jamaica, Long Island City, Port Morris, and all of Staten Island. Department officials estimate that up to 90 percent of businesses located in these ares will qualify for grant money.

The third round of grants is the last round and is expected to help about 520 small businesses in high-risk areas of New York. Qualifying small businesses may apply for a grant by going to www.nyc.gov/BusinessPrep.
