Small businesses located in Roanoke and Botetourt County, Virginia, have a shot at $200K worth of prizes and money awards in the annual Gauntlet Business Competition. The program was started by the Advancement Foundation, established in 2007 to advance the lives of underprivileged citizens in the Roanoke Valley.
Recognizing the importance of small business
The Advancement Foundation created the Gauntlet Business Competition to support small businesses who create jobs in the community. As stated by Annette Peterson, The Advancement Foundation, "Small business owners are the ones that invest and live in the community. Small business creates more jobs."
One recent award recipient said his "business has grown exponentially" because of the Gauntlet program. Award recipients receive grant money and prizes along with valuable business assets such as office space, business licenses, chamber memberships, computers, training, and money for equipment and supplies. Winners also participate in a training program, which will teach entrepreneurs business plan development, market research, operational detail and sales/marketing techniques.
