Colorado Grant Program Helps Small Theater Owners Remain Open for Business

Colorado Office of Economic Development and International Trade
Technology has changed just about every facet of personal and business life over the years. This includes the theater business. The cost to keep up with technology is high, making it difficult for many of the small cinemas to stay in business.

Switching to digital projectors can cost a small business owner $60-70,000. But grants from the Colorado Office of Economic Development and International Trade and the Denver Film Society have helped many remain open. The grants range from $10-30,000 and will help defray some of the cost for small theater owners.

The grant program is called the Rural Theater Digital Conversion Grant, and small business owners are welcome to apply. Since films are now distributed in digital format, these small business owners have no choice but to change technology in order to survive, but many just can't afford it.

The grants are made possible through the Colorado Office of Economic Development, the Denver Film Society, and through donations made to the grant program from the Boettcher Foundation and the Gates Family Foundation.
