USDA is Funding Energy-Efficiency Projects

USDA Rural Development Energy Grants
The U.S. Department of Agriculture's Rural Development agency is once again taking applications from small business owners in rural areas who have ideas that improve energy efficiency. Applicants may be from the U.S., Guam and the Northern Marianas. Funding is for small businesses to make energy efficiency improvements or add renewable energy-producing systems.

Energy improvements eligible for government grants include solar panels, switching to energy-efficient lighting, or installing wind-powered generators. The grants are being offered through the USDA's Rural Energy for America Program (REAP). The REAP program is now back on track since the government passed the 2014 Farm Bill.

Grant terms

Grants can range up to $250,000 for energy efficiency upgrades, and up to $500,000 for a renewable energy system install. In addition to grants, the government is also offering guaranteed loans to cover up to 85 percent of the cost of energy efficiency projects.

The grants are being offered again to small rural businesses and farmers in an effort to encourage them to decrease energy costs and implement more energy-efficient systems. The goal of the USDA is to eliminate greenhouse gas pollution that damages the climate.
