UB Small Business Grants Help Increase Innovation and Technology Research

Imagine being a small business owner, getting a government grant, and then getting another grant because you qualified for the government grant. It sounds almost too good to be true. But true it is. The State University of New York at Buffalo (UB) just awarded grants to 5 scientific companies to help them expand their research capabilities.

The UB awards

The grants are called the UB Small Business Innovation Awards (SBIA). They are awarded to small companies who have qualified for a federal Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) grant or Small Business Technology Transfer (STTR) grant. Those who receive the awards must be willing to use at least 30 percent of their federal grant to fund research using the UB research team. Qualifying companies may then receive up to a 20 percent SBIA match to fund additional work by the UB research team.

One recipient, Abcombi Biosciences, received a $300,000 STTR grant from the National Institutes of Health. They were awarded $35,039 from UB  to fund their research in developing products such as therapies for drug-resistant flu strains. Another company, Angiograft, received a $223,501 grant from the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute and were awarded a $14,750 grant from UB to continue their research on off-the-shelf vascular grafts for use in surgery.

The UB grants provides an opportunity for companies to grow their businesses, and also provides more research opportunities for faculty and staff, and increased learning opportunities for students.
