Rural Business Enterprise Grants Increase Opportunities For Native Americans In 18 States

The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) recently announced grants awarded to organizations in 18 states to support small businesses in rural America and improve the quality of life for Native American residents. The $2.7 million in recent funding is part of the Rural Business Enterprise Grant Program (RBEG) that has awarded more than $170 million in economic development assistance since its beginning.

States recently funded

The most recent states who received funding from the program include Alaska, Arizona, California, Connecticut, Idaho, Louisiana, Maine, Michigan, Minnesota, Montana, Nebraska, Nevada, New Mexico, North Dakota, Oklahoma, Oregon, South Dakota, and Wisconsin. The funding went to organizations who provide products and services that directly impact the lives of Native American citizens.

Eligibility

Applicants who are eligible for the grants include local governments, non-profit corporations and federally recognized Indian Tribes. The grant money can be used for distance learning programs, adult employment education programs, and other programs that create opportunities and jobs in small towns and rural communities.

Since the program began, under President Obama's administration, RBEG has created or retained more than 73,000 jobs and helped create more than 41,000 rural businesses and community projects.
