Food truck businesses serve a growing consumer demand for locally-produced food and also contribute toward the growth of the economy. The grant program offered grants up to $10,000 for new or growing food truck business owners who also contributed 25 percent of their own funds, and grants of $10,000 to $50,000 for existing farmers markets that have been in operation for at least four years in Michigan and contribute 50 percent of their own matching funds.
A total of eight mobile cuisine businesses from East Lansing, Kalamazoo, Flint, Pontiac, Southfield, Traverse City and Marquette received $78,000 in small business grant funds. In addition, 10 farmers markets received grants totaling $200,000.
Michigan Economic Development President and CEO Michael Finney explained, "The food truck business is booming...Mobile food trucks attract foot traffic to downtown areas and create a unique and flavorful dining experience." "These grants will support food entrepreneurs and local markets, strengthen communities and create jobs in our state."
